Abstract. <\/strong>This study presents \u0410li \u0422epelena, pasha of Ioannina, through the eyes\u00a0of a westerner – the French diplomat Fran\u00e7ois Pouqueville (1770 \u2013 1838), who in\u00a0early 1806, was sent by Emperor Napoleon I as a Commissioner General (Consul)\u00a0of France in the Sanjak of Ioannina. Thus, the Frenchman got a unique opportunity\u00a0\u2013 settling initially in the palace of the pasha, he became a witness and a participant\u00a0in Ali\u2019s everyday life. The resulting information and insights about the life in palace\u00a0find their place in many travelogues of Pouqueville which was also used as major\u00a0sources of the present study. The aim of this article is not to give an assessment of\u00a0life and policies pursued by the governor of Ioannina, but to enrich the image of him\u00a0familiarizing readers with interesting moments from his everyday life.

Abstract.<\/strong> This article presents biographical information about some individuals\u00a0that played crucial roles in the history of the Island monastery \u201cSt. John the\u00a0Baptist\u201d near Sozopol. REVISITING THE TERM „TURKISH YOKE“<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstract.<\/strong> The discussion about the legitimacy of the term „Turkish yoke“ rages at the beginning of the last decade of the twentieth century \u2013 and reasonably focused the public attention. The result of this discussion leads to the emergence of multiple uses of similar to meaning words in an attempt to find a common term for the non-state period of Bulgarian history from the fall of the medieval Bulgarian state at the end of the fourteenth century to the restoration of the Modern Bulgarian State as a result of the Eastern Crisis (1875 \u2013 1878) and the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation. This article argues that the term „Turkish yoke“ is a legitimate concept that characterized the whole system of violent Turkish rule, as imposed on Bulgarian and other Balkan lands in the process of conquest.<\/p>\n

A DISLIKED LEADER FROM THE TIME OF THE BULGARIAN REVIVAL<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstract.<\/strong> Disliked leadership is interesting mostly because of its inner contradictivness. According to P. Drucker, a leader is someone who has followers. The disliked leader has followers who have no sympathy towards him. The disliked leader this paper deals with is Dr Stoyan Chomakov. As lay leader of Bulgarian Church Movement he was extraordinary successful. It was mainly he who was responsible for the restoration of the autocephalous Bulgarian Church. In that capacity Dr Chomakov deserves to be considered as one of the most important founding fathers of modern Bulgaria. Despite this major achievement posterity, just like his contemporaries, historians disliked him, too. Nowadays Bulgaria doesn\u2019t know, and doesn\u2019t care, much about the creator of its Church. The paper ends with a quotation from Plutarch (\u201cingratitude towards great men is the mark of a strong people\u201d) and a question: is the attitude to Dr Chomakov of the kind the cited ancient author meant or it is simple negligence towards the important truths about the past?<\/p>\n
